Do I need a city permit for a fence, and where do I get one?
All fences built in the City of Fruita require a fence permit. You may obtain the permit through the application process on City's permitting software Cloudpermit. Be sure to apply for a Cloudpermit account.
Do I need a city permit for a shed, and where do I get one?
If you are building a shed larger than 80 square feet you will need a City of Fruita Planning Clearance. You may obtain the permit on Cloudpermit. If you need help with your application please come to the Planning & Development Department located in the Fruita Civic Center at 325 E. Aspen Ave., Fruita, CO 81521. If your shed is less than 80 square feet, you will still need to make sure you meet the setback distances specified by your zoning district. Zoning information may be obtained from the Community Development Department.

Do I need a permit to demolish an existing structure?
You will need a city Demolition Permit if you are demolishing an existing structure in Fruita. This permit can be obtained using the City's permitting software Cloudpermit.

Do I need a permit to put up a fence?
Yes. Six foot rear yard privacy fences, 3’ solid or 4’ open front yard fences along with materials approved need to be discussed. We also need to check what restrictions may apply to the type of zone the property is within. We also recommend you talk with your HOA, if applicable, to see if there are additional restrictions.
Do I need to fill out a Waiver form every time I register for a Recreation class?
For programs that reoccur monthly throughout the year, like aquatics classes and Karate, only one Waiver form is required per year on initial registration. For programs that occur seasonally, like soccer or flag football, a Waiver form is necessary for each separate program.
Do I need to renew my Short-term rental permit?
Yes, if you have a Short-Term Rental permit, you must renew it annually. A renewal application must be submitted by December 1st of each year. Permits are valid for a single calendar year and expire on December 31st of each year.
Does Court really start at 5:00 PM?
Yes. All initial arraignments or first appearances start at 5:00PM, generally held on the first Wednesday of each month for juveniles (persons under age 18), and generally held on the second Wednesday of each month for Adults. There are some exceptions due to holidays and other Court conflicts. Please check your citation. All summons are issued with a 5:00 PM appearance time. Please do not be late.
Does the City allow Short Term Rentals?

Does the city have event space for baby showers, birthdays, meetings, etc?
Yes, the Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of reservation options. Residents can rent the Fruita Community Center community rooms as well as the pool party room. They also offer shelter reservations at city parks and during the summer, residents can rent the outdoor yurt and shelters at the pool. Does the City maintain maps of Fruita available to the public?
Yes! The City maintains an online GIS system to help inform the public and help city staff stay up to date on Fruita's infrastructure, amenities, and land use. The system allows users to view different layers such as subdivisions, city limits, Fruita’s Urban Growth Boundary, and more. Does the City of Fruita have a landfill?
Mesa County has a landfill transfer station at 1275 17 1/2 Road (north of the city). The transfer station is open on specific dates at specific times. Their phone number is (970) 858-1034. Mesa County also has a landfill located at 3071 Highway 50 (241-6846) which is open Monday through Saturday.
Does the City of Fruita maintain a list of helpful community resources?

Does the City of Fruita spray for mosquitoes?
No, but the Grand River Mosquito Control District does. The last time they sprayed was on August 2, 2022, from 17 Rd to 19 Rd, north of the highway, and 21 Rd to 24 Rd north of the highway. To help protect the honeybee population and for increased public acceptance, the district only sprays after dark when honeybees have returned to their hives. Does the Fruita Community Center offer a discounted rate for Fruita residents?
Residents are able to purchase memberships and punch cards at a discounted rate. Daily admission and program fees will remain the same for both residents and non-residents.
How can I avoid paying the bag fee?
Customers can avoid paying the 10-cent fee by bringing their own bags to the store or purchasing a reusable bag, if available. Customers can also choose not to bag their purchase.
How can I become more involved in my local government?
There are many opportunities to serve on Fruita’s volunteer Boards and Commissions. Some Boards have a residency requirement and an interview may be required as well. Please submit an application form to the City Clerk’s Office, ATTN: Deputy City Clerk Debra Woods at 325 E. Aspen Ave., Fruita, CO 81521 or drop it off at the Fruita Civic Center.
How do HOAs affect short-term rentals?
Even if City zoning permits the operation of a Short-Term Rental, HOA covenants applicable to your property may not allow for you to operate a Short-Term Rental. The City zoning does not supersede the HOA covenants with respect to Short-Term Rentals. Check with your HOA and covenants prior to submittal of a Short-Term Rental Application.
How do I apply for a liquor license?
It is usually best to call the City Clerk’s Office at (970) 858-3663 to set up a time to meet with the Deputy City Clerk for a pre-application meeting and to receive all the forms. When you call, it is extremely helpful to have information regarding what type of liquor license you are applying for and how many individuals will be listed on the liquor license. Complete an application, background packet and waiver and return it to the HR Office at 325 E. Aspen Avenue.
How do I apply for a sales tax license?
The Colorado Department of Revenue collects all city sales taxes for the City of Fruita. If you are a business that collects sales tax, you will need to apply for a Colorado State Sales Tax License through the Colorado Department of Revenue. How do I find out when City Council meets and what's on the agenda?
Fruita City Council meets on the 1st, 3rd, and 4th Tuesday of each month. Regular City Council meetings begin at 7 p.m. and City Council Workshops begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Fruita Civic Center Council Chambers. A full calendar of meetings can be found online on the agendas, minutes, and packets containing detailed info on each item on the agenda are also posted online the Friday before the meeting date.
How do I get my utilities located and marked before starting construction?
The Utility Notification Center of Colorado processes the locating and marking of any buried utilities around your excavation site. The UNCC can be reached at 1-800-922-1987 FREE, or by dialing "811". It's always a good idea to call before you dig.
